Our specialty

Why our MLV vaccines come freeze-dried

Modified-live viral vaccines (IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV) are fragile. Lyophilizing — freeze-drying the virus into a dry cake inside the vial — is how we keep the dose you give in June as potent as the day it left the plant.

At the plant

Frozen, then dried

Live virus is frozen and the water removed under vacuum, leaving a stable cake with potency locked in.

In your fridge

Dry cake + sterile diluent

Two vials: the freeze-dried vaccine and its diluent. Keep both at 35–45°F; the cake is far more forgiving of a warm truck than liquid MLV.

At the chute

Mix, swirl, use within an hour

Transfer diluent into the cake, swirl gently — never shake — and keep it on ice. Mix only what you'll run through the chute in the next hour.

Potency

Freeze-drying stops the degradation that liquid live-virus vaccines suffer from the moment they're filled. The dose on the label is the dose in the syringe.

Shelf life

Unopened lyophilized MLV carries a longer dating than liquid equivalents, so you can buy for the season without watching the expiration.

Cold-chain margin

Every vaccine must stay refrigerated, but a dry cake tolerates the real-world minutes on a tailgate or in a cooler far better than a reconstituted dose.

Combo flexibility

Our 5-Way + VL5 uses the liquid Vibrio-Lepto bacterin as the diluent — one reconstitution, one shot, full pre-breeding coverage.

Built for ranch work

Every vial is sized for a chute day: 10-dose for small groups, 50-dose for the big run, with a tear-off cap that opens with gloves on.

Protocol guide

A cow-calf year, at the headgate

A typical spring-calving protocol using Headgate products. Timing shifts with your calving window; this is the map, not the prescription — build the final program with your veterinarian.

Follow every label. Modified-live vaccines have pregnancy restrictions unless the label specifically allows use in pregnant cows previously vaccinated with the same product. Observe withdrawal times and Beef Quality Assurance injection guidelines: subcutaneous, in the neck, tented, with a new needle every 10 head.

Why direct

The markup you've been paying belongs in your pocket

Most cattle vaccines travel from a manufacturer to a national distributor to a farm store before they reach your fridge. Each stop adds a margin, and none of them adds a single dose of protection.

Headgate skips both stops. We manufacture in our own licensed facility, hold the inventory ourselves, and ship it to you in cold-chain packaging. That is the entire reason we can price 15–20% under retail without touching the product.

You get the same thing the distributor got — from the same lot, on the same day it left the cooler — with a veterinarian who will pick up the phone when you have a question about a protocol.

Based on the protocol above: pre-breeding combo, clostridials, pour-on, fly tags and mineral for cows; two rounds of MLV and clostridial, intranasal, and a drench for calves. Your program will differ — this is the shape of the savings, not a quote.
